Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Radio Show and Podcast

The Voice of Moto Travel

Aug 26, 2016

Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper.

Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost.

So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills.

For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. There's something special about holding a book in your hand and turning the page. Or, the next best thing, for those of us limited in space, or travelling, or just trying to keep costs down, are downloadable eBooks. Or if you are tight for time, you can listen to someone read a book on CD or download it to hear it.

And, of course, since motorcycles are our passion and yours, we have been lucky to have some fantastic authors on our show and have compiled a list of some of these authors. But, there are many, many authors out there who we haven't had on the show, who have written valuable, informative or just plain entertaining books. Peruse your local book store, or check out some authors websites. Pick a book, or two, and put up your feet and take a trip to South America, India, Africa, Europe or wherever your heart desires, plan a motorcycle adventure, or learn a thing or two about riding or repairs.

California Lane Splitting Made Legal - Will it Pave the Way?

California is the first state to legalize motorcycle lane splitting in Bill No. 51. David Hough, author of Proficient Motorcycling and other books, comes on to ARR to talk about this new bill, what lane splitting is and what it's going to change, if anything.

Anna Grechishkina left Kiev, Ukraine in July, 2013 to follow her dreams of a trip around the world. Having fallen in love with motorcycling in 2005 when she got her license through the arduous Ukrainian licensing system, she started to take trips that were weeks to a few months long to different countries with friends. It seemed logical to morph in to a longer trip, perhaps a year or two riding around the world. Anna began to look in to an alternate bike, one which she hoped would be more suitable for the kind of riding she wanted to do. And after some time spent negotiating and convincing, KTM supplied her with a motorcycle.

Anna doesn't claim to be rich or a highly experienced rider, in fact she says she had only $1000 in her pocket when she left Ukraine and says she is a cautious and responsible rider. Not seeming to be a high risk taker, Anna still decided to ride this much bigger bike than what she was accustomed to, thinking that if the trip was meant to be then it would all come together.

Three years later, Anna is grateful to have travelled to many countries and to all those who have helped her realize her dream. And as she begins the next leg of her trip to Africa, Anna is working on a book to share her experiences of travelling the world and meeting the people who make our earth such a wonderful place.

When the Going Gets Stuck - Rider Skills - Bret Tkacs

How to get out of sand or mud when your bike gets buried or you get “stuck in a rut”. What tools, techniques and methods can you employ to get unstuck?

Tools:

Z-drag system
  2 - pulleys
  Anchor strap
Bike strap (flat straps used for tie-down are ideal
  Non-stretch utility cord (rope)
  Two climbing carabiners
  Two prusik loops

Extrications tools
1” flat strap (for towing or pulling)
  Collapsible shovel
  Winch system (Warn XT 17)
Hatchet, ax or large knife (for cutting wood or branches for ground support)
Bike tie down loops or short rope loops (for hand holds)

Improvised tools
Logs or boards for supporting raised bike
  Boards or rods for leverage
Large rocks for leverage points or “roll back” brake
Tarp, plastic orcloth for surface integrity
  Branches, bushes
  Friends or bystanders
  Other vehicles
Rock or flat board for side stand pivoting

Detailed Instruction - How To

Focus on deep mud and sand:
Unload the bike as much as possible.
Dig out one side from the tires.
If needed, place a dispersed surface down before tilting bike over.
Push the bike over onto it's side so that tires are elevated.
Trench out a path in front of the tire path of travel (critical).
Fill the trench with something to prevent sinking.
  Rock, tarp, branches, wood, clothing.
Stand the bike back up and ease it out under power (important to know how to work the grey    zone).

Bonus help
Have someone (s) pull from the front of the bike using straps or rope.
Tie the rope as low on the bike as possible so you lift as you pull.
If anyone “pushes from the rear it is more often helpful to have them press straight down with all  their weight to increase traction rather than push forward”.
Tie off to another vehicle to help as a tug.
Set up a Z-drag system to offer leverage advantage.
  Use a winch system.
Often “rocking” the bike with the clutch to get things moving helps.

The Don’ts …

Don’t get excited and throw the clutch out too fast and break traction.
Don’t get intimidated and fully disconnect power unless you get a total loss of traction (if the  wheel is spinning you have lost traction).
Don’t “push” the bike and work harder than needed, use as much motor as possible.
Don’t dig yourself in deeper by spinning the tire.
Don’t rush your set up before you start to recover yourself.

The Do’s
Do take as much time as needed to prepare the exit.
Do make the exit as smooth and level as possible.
Do adhere to safety (after all, being hurt and stuck is worse than just being stuck).

Listener Exercise

1. Work on perfecting your clutch control by finding a hill that is slick and practice starting from a stop.
2. When you can no longer start from a stop have a friend apply all their weight to the back of the bike by pressing straight down.
3. From the same location experiment by changing the surface by adding…
     Rock
     Branches
     Old clothes
     Tarp
     Wood
4. Dig a small trench only a few inches deep and about a foot long with a very shallow exit and try again.
5. Practice tipping your bike over far enough to raise the wheels off the ground and then picking it back up.

Water weighs in at  8.34 pounds per US Gallon or by the litre its .7 kg or 1.6 pounds, and humans need on average of 2.2 - 3 litres of water per day.
When we are packing for a motorcycle adventure, water and fuel are often left to the end to be fitted into whatever space remains, but considering the weight and bulk of liquids, not to mention the challenge of leakproof containers, perhaps it should be our first consideration.
And now that you have all that bulk and weight in water you still may need extra fuel storage. Fuel weighs less than water but still ranks high on your list of consumables for weight.
So what do you do about all this weight and bulk of the extra water and fuel on your bike without making it feel like your riding an overloaded scooter?

Lyndon Poskitt is a passionate motorcyclist who has spent many years racing motorcycles, with the apogee being the Dakar Rally in 2013. He decided he was ready for something different and planned to travel around the world to different places, racing when the opportunities were there. He sold most of his possession and two years ago he set out on his self built custom adventure bike, which he calls Basil.

For Lyndon, this has been quite the adventure, he's been travelling unsupported, racing Basil, doing his own repairs and maintenance and he's still on the road, looking for races in different places.

Dr. Gregory Frazier has been described as "America's #1 extreme motorcycle adventurer." He's an author, moto journalist, photographer and a documentary film maker. And he's a motorcycle adventure junkie.

He wrote the book "Motorcycle Adventurer" about the first real adventure rider, Carl Stearns Clancy, who circumnavigated the globe in 1912-1913, and he shares some secrets about this book with ARR. He talks about myths and untruths about motorcycle adventure, and how the internet can give misinformation about which he says, "never let the truth get in the way of a good ride tale".

In Dr Gregory Frazier's latest book DOWN AND OUT IN PATAGONIA, KAMCHATKA AND TIMBUKTU, he tells how he became "motorcycle adventure junkie" and he shares some tips and tricks that has fed his "addiction”.

Surf Boards, Horses and Bikes

Sam Chisholm is a helicopter pilot from Australia that was feeling the itch to have an adventure. He came up with a plan to ride a motorcycle from Argentina to Alaska, and so he quit his job and flew to South America. His two friends joined him and he's now half way through their adventure. They're proving that what seems impossible can be possible, by learning as they go. They traded skills with a couple of other riders, surfing for horseback riding. And even though they didn't know how to ride a motorbike, or how to surf, let alone pitch a tent, they are learning as they go, and having a great time of it.

Rider Skills - Bret Tkacs

Due diligence before you do a trip and being prepared. A list of some of the things you may want to learn before you head off in to the wild.

Too often riders buy a motorcycle, GPS, travel kit and head out for their adventure without considering what could go wrong or the skills they are lacking. Riders will spend countless hours researching the perfect bike, tent or tires but will not even consider a first aid class beyond the one that tells them to call 911. Bikes and kit come and go but being armed with knowledge and skill is what you get to keep with you and can keep what could be a minor incident from turning into a tragedy.

1. Rider training
Preventing injury through skills
Preventing bike damage through more precise riding
Reducing fatigue with low energy riding techniques so you don’t make mistakes and are ready to deal with the unplanned
Advanced street training

2. Mechanical training

Preventive maintenance to reduce mechanical failure or a resulting accident
Roadside repairs
Flats
Broken chains
Bearing replacement
Seal replacements (forks)
Bent rim repair
Cracked engine case or leak repair
Submersion recovery (what to do if you bike goes swimming)
Bodywork repair
Stripped bolts or lost bolts/screw/nuts

3. Medical training
First aid
Mountaineering style training
i. Improvising
ii. Long term first aid
Building a personal or group aid kit
Knowing your medications for travel use (home remedies)
Exposure training or outdoor survival basics

4. Navigation
Knowing your GPS
i. Tracks vs routes
ii. Maps
iii. Common failures
Compass work
Map reading

5. Prevention
Bike selection and set up
Riding gear and clothing selection
What and how to research
Emergency communication
i. PLB’s and trackers
ii. Two way communication
iii. Cell and Sat phones
iv. Other
v. Situational awareness (vision and pattern recognition)
vi. Personal self defense

6. Recovery training (also needed for many international travels)
Bike recovery
i. Winching and leveraging
ii. Mud recovery
iii. Picking up bikes
iv. Towing
v. Loading and strapping

July Behl - Madagascar Adventure

July Behl, was one of the six finalists for the United People of Adventure project organized by Touratech, with their initiative being to unite riders from different continents, cultures and speaking different languages, through their love of adventure motorcycling and travel.

July found riding in Madagascar incredibly exciting, experiencing "gnarly roads to deep sand, broken bridges to unforgiving ruts, extreme heat to torrential rain, mad foreigners to slightly confused locals". He connected with his fellow riders saying "the people, everyone and I mean everyone was just brilliant - helpful, kind, considerate and always there for each other". It's a trip he won't ever forget, and would do again in a heartbeat.

Not for all people, but quite often for many of us, when we leave on a trip, be it a few weeks, months or a year or more, we face emotional and financial hurdles. First we spend time planning, and we reach a point where we have crossed all our t’s and dotted all our i’s. We know exactly how things are going to go, where we will be and how much money we need, or so we think. Once on the road, some of us may feel homesick, or lost. We get lonely, financially strapped, worried or unsure about how this trip will pan out. These hurdles, if you persevere, are usually overcome as you fall in to a rhythm. And soon the road becomes your home, you meet new people and experience new cultures. You can find work on the road in different locations, or be self employed, writing articles, blogging or making films. Once you find your niche, your comfort zone is expanded and you begin to thrive.

As you know from the many extended travel riders we have interviewed in the past, there are those who find they have a need to return home at the end of a trip and some who don’t want to go back to a traditional life at all.

Scooter Tramp Scotty and Michelle Hope are great examples of true living on the road. Finding work wherever they go, connecting with old friends and making new ones.

And then are those who leave for a year and don’t come back home for 14 years. Ian Coates had wanderlust, travelling at a very slow pace. He just couldn’t bring himself to return home until he was good and ready.

And some go for a while, then return home for a time, and hit the road again as soon as they can. They may have work or other obligations, health concerns or they just may feel the need to spend time with family before tasting freedom again. Ara Geureghian and Spirit spend most of their time on the road, returning home for different reasons, always with the intention of getting on the road again as soon as possible.

Daniel Rintz and his partner Josie, have just completed their riding adventure from Alaska to Argentina. When the trip was coming to an end, they realized they just couldn’t stop riding and go back to a regular lifestyle. They prefer to face Africa underfunded, figuring out the financial bits as they go rather than go back to normal life. For some, this is hard to fathom, for others, well, we either dream about it or do it.

We’ve had many opportunities to explore old cemeteries and something always seems to grab us when we do. When we look at the names and dates, the condition of the graves, we realize that one day it is inevitable, we will be forgotten. Our families and friends will remember us while they are still living, but as the years go by, pretty soon we are just a name on a gravestone with a birth and death date. If we won’t be remembered forever, then isn’t only right that we should live life to the fullest, throw caution to the wind and make memories for ourselves?

Why let our fears or worries about travel and the unknown stop us? Take that trip or live the lifestyle that you have always wanted to. Be it on the road for 14 years, 14 months, or 14 days, just get in to the rhythm and travel. Experience life, escape the box.

When One Year Turns in to Three - Petra and Anders Stridfeldt

With their three sons grown and moved out, Petra and Anders felt what they called boredom, that loss we all feel when we’ve worked and lived to raise our families, and then being needed comes to an end. So they came up with a plan to ride their motorcycles around the world. They quit their jobs, sold their house, car and most of their belongings and in 5 months were on the road. They only planned to be gone a year, maybe a year and a half, but three years later they are still riding, having explored 40 countries and ridden about 108,000 km. And it doesn’t look like there’s an end in sight for Petra and Anders motorcycle adventure. Jim caught up with them in Sao Paulo before they leave for Europe and Africa.

Mary McGee - Legendary Motorcycle Racer

Mary McGee is truly an inspirational rider, who has paved the way for many women competitors and riders alike. She started out racing cars in the 1950’s and then got in to motorcycle road racing, enduro, motocross and finally vintage racing in the 2000’s. She started racing long before it was acceptable for women, racing against men simply because there weren’t any women’s classes in racing. And when Mary received the FIM Woman Legend in 2012, she finally decided to get her street riding license, and signed up for a basic motorcycle riding class!

Mary turns 80 years old this year, and when you hear her voice in this interview, she just doesn’t sound like your average octogenarian. She’s witty, spry and just sounds way younger than her years. It must be motorcycling that keeps her young, and if that’s the case, then we should all be doing it. Bravo Mary! You are one of our greatest mentors!

Brad Barker - Operation Ecuador

Brad is the producer of The Ride of My Life videos and website, with the goal of discovering the good stuff, exploring and riding to different places in the world, and to impact lives in a positive way.

In April 2016, the people of Ecuador were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and are still in desperate need of aid. Brad went down to Ecuador and helped a local motorcycle club distribute some supplies to the victims. Brad Barker is planning Operation Ecuador, and is gathering donations of money and supplies to deliver to Ecuador. In partnership with RawHyde, the Coalition of Hope Foundation and the local Ecuador motorcycle club, the Brosters, he is taking a relief shipment down when the containers are full. They are seeking financial and good donations, as well as asking for help to unload and distribute goods. If you would like to help in any of these ways, check out Brad’s website.

May 26, 2016

We can find all kinds of reasons and excuses to keep putting off a short road trip, let alone a trip to other countries. As we all know, work can be the stopper in trip planning. We have to make money to support our riding addictions after all! And what if you’re just not comfortable enough to ride on your own, would a group tour be just the thing for you? Or if you know nothing about bike repairs?

Even the biggest of problems has a solution, sometimes you have to jump through some hoops, make mistakes or just figure it out. While some obstacles can be intimidating or difficult, once you overcome them you may be surprised what you discover. In this episode we talk with Kinga Tanajewska and Brian Clarke about their adventure motorcycle trips and what they had to do to get there.

Kinga Tanajewska - Combining Work & Adventure in Australia

Kinga Tanajewska knew an interest of motorcycles at a young age, and rode street bikes since her teens when her parents bought her a motorcycle for graduation. She moved from Poland to Australia, and there developed a passion for adventure motorcycling led by her desire to see as much of Australia’s outback as she could. She had a dream to ride around Australia, but wanted to keep her job. She also had no repair skills in case she had a flat or other break down.

By splitting her trip in to two parts, and incorporating a couple of job transfers, she was able to mesh work and riding and ride solo around Australia. She experienced beautiful scenery, wildlife, and remote camping. For Kinga, changing a tire turned out not to be a concern after all, and now she is grabs any opportunity to ride. We call that rider mania!

Brian Clarke - People & Places Make the Adventure

Brian Clarke wasn’t happy being a mechanic, he’d had some failed relationships and was in desperate need for a change in his life. He’d always loved motorcycles but the expense kept him from riding, until he bought an old 600 Bandit and then he was hooked. Not knowing much about long distance adventure travel, he decided to book a Pan America motorcycle tour. Although his bike did break down just before the near three month trip was over, and the tour had proved challenging in more ways than one, Brian now realized that he was able to travel on his own. He didn’t need to rely on anyone else to guide him. He returned to the UK, leaving his motorcycle in Calgary, Canada. After a year, he flew back, got his bike and his two wheeled travel life began.

Brian eyes were opened to the beauty of the land and people in the places he visited. He met the love of his life, motorcyclist Michelle Lamphere, and instead of an undesirable job, he passionately pursues riding and submits articles to various moto publications. Life is good!
